Two US police officers killed in 'ambush-style attacks'

Two Iowa police officers who were killed in ambush-style attacks were both shot while they were sitting in their patrol cars, officials said.

Des Moines Police Sgt Paul Parizek said there is "clearly danger" right now for police in the area because the victims were gunned down while sitting in their cars, and not involved in any incident.

He said authorities are gathering information on possible suspects, and have doubled up on officer numbers.

The first victim, an Urbandale officer, was shot about 1.06am local time. About 20 minutes later, a Des Moines officer was found shot about two miles away.

"There's somebody out there shooting police officers. We hope to find him before somebody else gets hurt," said Sgt Parizek, who became emotional at times during a news conference.

Urbandale is a city in the Des Moines metropolitan area which has about 50 police officers.
