Mandela in good spirits for Christmas

Nelson Mandela is looking “much better” and is in good spirits, South Africa’s president said after visiting the former leader at his hospital bedside on Christmas morning.

President Jacob Zuma said he joined Mr Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, and other family members in wishing him a merry Christmas.

According to Mr Zuma, doctors are “happy” with Mr Mandela’s progress.

Mr Mandela was admitted to hospital on December 8.

He was diagnosed with a lung infection and also had a procedure to remove gallstones.

Officials have previously said Mr Mandela was improving, but doctors are taking special care of him because he is 94 years old.
