'I believe she is lying', witness tells court in Ched Evans rape retrial

Evans, 27, denies raping the teenager and insisted she consented to having sex.

Prosecutors say the woman was too drunk to know what was happening or who she was with.

On day five of the case, Cardiff Crown Court heard from a defence witness who said he had taken home the woman "two or three times" following drunken nights out - and was shocked by her reaction one particular occasion.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: "The following morning, she asked me if anything had happened the night before......It was like she didn't know nothing.

"I was surprised because I did not think she was that drunk.

"She seemed capable of making decisions."

And the man also told the court that two weeks after the complainant's alleged incident with Evans, she had approached him in a nightclub promising to show him a "good time".

In evidence he said: "What did I understand her to mean by that? Sex.

"I just laughed at first because I thought she was joking until the end of the night when she asked me again."

During cross-examination, the witness admitted he knew of a website called ChedEvans.com, which at one stage offered a £50,000 reward for information that could lead to the football star's acquittal.

However, he insisted that money was not his motivation for coming forward and that he also had not received a penny either.

"Why am I here? (in court)....because I believe she is lying," he said.

"Did I come here to tell the jury a pack of lies? No."

Jurors have previously heard that Evans arrived by taxi at the Premier Inn near Rhyl at around 4am on May 30 2011, after a text from footballing friend Clayton McDonald saying: "I've got a bird".

The former Manchester City player admitted he was "childish" to walk into Mr McDonald's hotel room believing he may be having sex.

However, the St Asaph born forward told jurors that he joined in with the couple after the woman asked him to perform oral sex on her.

The court heard that Evans' then 18-year-old brother Ryan Roberts had been outside Room 14's window with a friend as the pair "giggled" and filmed some of the incident on a mobile phone.

Mr Roberts, now 23 and a secondary school maths teacher, told jurors he was ashamed of his actions that morning - saying that he had consumed 10 to 15 Jack Daniels and cokes in three-and-half-hours.

However, he told jurors he was "not very drunk" and could remember seeing the woman in the hotel room "enjoying herself".

A court heard Mr McDonald later left the hotel via the main entrance, while Evans went out via a fire exit.

During cross-examination, the striker insisted there was "nothing sinister" about his actions and that the fire door was nearer to the road he was going to walk home on.

After the court was shown a four second clip of Evans leaving the building, prosecuting counsel Simon Medland QC asked the defendant: "You came out of that fire door and deliberately tucked your head down ... you've got your head down so you would not be looking at the camera. What would you say to that?"

Evans, who said he had originally gone to the hotel to tell Mr McDonald about a friend's arrest by police, replied: "I would say you were wrong."

On Tuesday, he also told jurors that he would never take advantage of a girl or have sex with a girl who had not given him consent.

The court previously heard Evans was in a relationship with Natasha Massey at the time.

They are still in a relationship, plan to marry and have a nine-month-old son.

Jurors also know that Evans was originally found guilty of raping the woman following a trial at Caernarfon Crown Court in 2012 - while Mr McDonald was acquitted.

Evans' conviction was later quashed by the Court of Appeal and a retrial ordered.

On the first day of the case, High Court Judge Mrs Justice Nicola Davies told the jury: "You are to try this case on the evidence you hear in this court in this trial and nothing else."

Evans denies rape.

The case will continue on Wednesday.
