Ambushed aid workers laid to rest

Hundreds of Pakistani villagers have attended the funerals of the aid workers and teachers gunned down by militants in the country’s north-west.

Family and friends on buried two of the women teachers, along with a woman health worker and a male medical technician.

The four were among seven people killed on their way home from a community centre in the town of Swabi where they were employed by a non-governmental organisation.

There has been no claim of responsibility, and no arrests have been made, although the Taliban is suspected of the attack as part of their murderous campaign against vaccination programmes.

Many militants in Pakistan view the vaccination campaigns as cover for western espionage

The director of the NGO said he suspected the attack might have been retribution for the group’s work helping vaccinate Pakistani children against polio.
