Oscar Pistorius 'taken to hospital with chest pains'

Jailed athlete Oscar Pistorius has been taken from prison to hospital for medical examinations, with South African media reporting he was complaining of chest pains.

Department of Corrections spokesman Logan Maistry initially told the Associated Press that Pistorius was taken to hospital on Thursday and was expected to return to prison later the same day.

However, Mr Maistry said Pistorius will now stay overnight in the hospital "for observation".

Mr Maistry declined to give details of Pistorius's medical complaint.

Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympic runner and multiple Paralympic champion, is serving a six-year jail term for murder over the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Pistorius has served a year of his sentence.
