Saturday's TV tips

MOTD Live: The FA Cup (BBC1, 3.55pm)

Gary Lineker presents coverage of the final from Wembley Stadium, where the Gunners will be trying to retain the title, and the Villans will aim to lift the trophy for the first time since 1957.

Tim Sherwood has revitalised the Villa side since taking over from Paul Lambert in February, which in turn has led to star striker Christian Benteke recapturing the type of form that garnered much acclaim prior to his long-term absence through injury.

Despite the threat he will pose to the Arsenal rearguard, Arsene Wenger’s men will be confident of winning this trophy for the 12th time in their history, which would see them surpass Manchester United as the most successful team in the history of this famous competition.

Kick-off is at 5.30pm.

The Magic Show Story (UTV, 6.30pm)

Stephen Mulhern started his professional showbiz career as a magician, so he’s the ideal person to host this insight into 60 years of amazing stunts and illusions.

Among the clips to look out for are Paul Daniels faking his own death on air, Dynamo levitating above the Shard and David Copperfield’s flying illusion.

Stephen also gets to meet several magical masters, including such personal heroes as Daniels and Penn and Teller, and profiles some of the major names who have proved influential over the years, including early TV exponents David Nixon and Tommy Cooper.

Nixon’s glamorous assistant Anita Harris is among those recalling their memories of TV magic, alongside Geoffrey Durham, Dynamo and Darcy Oake.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) (UTV, 8.30pm) - Premiere

High school student Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is haunted by the disappearance of his parents.

He lives with his uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and aunt May (Sally Field) and contends with all the usual growing pains, including persistent bullying from jock classmate Flash Thompson (Chris Zylka).

A tender romance with fellow student Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), daughter of police chief Captain Stacy (Denis Leary), keeps Peter on an even keel until he is bitten by a genetically modified arachnid that imbues him with superhuman powers.

At the same time, Peter discovers evidence linking his parents’ disappearance to his father’s business partner, Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans). Little does Peter realise that Connors also has a secret alter ego: reptilian menace The Lizard.

Casualty (BBC1, 8.55pm)

Marcus, a young, talented skater, gets mixed up with the wrong crowd and ends up robbing an arcade run by the unscrupulous proprietor Keong.

When the situation escalates, a skate-shop owner tries to stop the incident coming to a tragic end.

Meanwhile, in the Emergency Department, Charlie worries about Louis’s wellbeing following his return from Romania, and Lily helps a young woman – who happens to be one of Keong’s employees – escape a difficult situation involving a wager placed on her ailing mother’s odds of survival by her decidedly dodgy boss.

Quartet (2012) (BBC2, 9.00pm)

Run with a gentle yet firm touch by on-staff medic Dr Lucy Cogan (Sheridan Smith), retirement home Beecham House heaves with eccentrics, including luvvie Cedric (Michael Gambon), who masterminds the annual fundraising concert attended by staff and wealthy donors.

Three of the residents – Reginald (Tom Courtenay), Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Cissy (Pauline Collins) – once performed Verdi’s quartet from Rigoletto as part of a celebrated quartet.

The unexpected arrival of the group’s fourth member, Reg’s ex-wife Jean (Maggie Smith), sends shockwaves through Beecham House.

Once Jean adjusts to the gentle ebb and flow of daily life at the home and rebuilds bridges that were burnt to a cinder, she rediscovers her passion for performance.

Big Brother (TV3, 9pm)

Big Brother will play with time during tasks and have secret missions to create tension in the house.

1864 (BBC4, 9pm)

You don’t need a working knowledge of Danish history – or indeed, the language - to be swept up in this epic drama series.

In this week’s double bill, Denmark’s troops are under pressure following the evacuation of Danevirke, but Laust is suffering more than most when his division is caught in a snowstorm - and he is then ordered to retrieve an artillery piece from a frozen lake.

Meanwhile, Inge is expelled by her family and sets about finding her lost love - but a chance encounter in the second episode seems to dash her hopes.
