Williams could return for 'Mrs. Doubtfire' sequel

Robin Williams could be set to reprise his role as 'Mrs. Doubtfire'.

The 62-year-old actor and Chris Columbus, who directed the original 1993 hit comedy, are both attached to a sequel with the script being penned by 'Elf' writer David Berenbaum, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Williams starred as a struggling actor and recently divorced father of three in 'Mrs. Doubtfire', who, in order to spend more time with his children, posed as a Scottish nanny named Euphegenia Doubtfire.

The film was a huge success, earning $219m domestically and $222m internationally, with Williams also winning a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical/comedy while 'Mrs. Doubtfire' itself won the Golden Globe award for best comedy/musical.

Although the idea of a sequel has been discussed since 2001, when Bonnie Hunt was enlisted to pen a script, Columbus and Williams never felt any of the drafts by Hunt or other writers were strong enough.

However, the project is said to have become active again earlier this year when Berenbaum became involved.

Columbus is currently in pre-production on his latest movie 'Pixels' starring Adam Sandler, while Williams will be appearing in 'The Angriest Man in Brooklyn' next month and is the star of the series 'The Crazy Ones'.
