Vera Pauw's side were knocked off the top-spot in Group I by the world's second highest ranked women's team, who go two points ahead in the battle for European Championship qualification.

The German women were 3-0 up at the break, with goals from Marina Hegering, Dzsenifer Marozsán and Lea Schüller.

Hegering opened the scoring in the 8th minute, putting Vera Pauw's side on the back foot from the offset.

Marie Hourihan was given little chance of putting a stop to a screamer from Marozsán in the 38th minute, with Schüller's goal in the 41st minute adding insult to injury, trickling over the line.

Ireland held well in the second half, defending ferociously as Germany pushed for a second half goal.

The eight-time European Championship winners have won all of their group stage matches so far, including a massive 8-0 win over Ukraine and a 5-0 win over Greece.

The girls in green now sit in second place in Group I, on 13 points, while their next opponents Ukraine sit in fourth with three points and a game in hand.

The Republic of Ireland women will be away to Ukraine on October 23rd.
