Catherine Zeta-Jones is to star in 'Broken City'.

The Oscar-winning actress will appear alongside Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe in the Allen Hughes-directed drama, in which she will play the cheating wife of the New York Mayor (Crowe).

Wahlberg will play a Brooklyn detective, who is hired by the mayor to identify his spouse's lover but when the man turns up dead, the detective uncovers a wider conspiracy involving the politician.

The script has been written by Brian Tucker, while Wahlberg, Randall Emmett, Stephen Levinson and George Furla will produce, Deadline.com reports.

Filming will start in New York next month.

Earlier this year, Catherine was cast as a villainous "arch conservative" in 'Rock of Ages'.

The Welsh actress - who underwent treatment for Bipolar II disorder, also known as manic depression - will play an evil character who wants to close down "rock and roll in Los Angeles", director Adam Shankman has confirmed.

He said: "It's a character that we only really came to in the last month. The character was invented to streamline the stories.

"She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock 'n roll in the great city of Los Angeles."

The movie is based on the Broadway musical of the same name, and has already cast Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Mary J. Blige.

Catherine - who is married to actor Michael Douglas - is also due to star in 'Playing the Field' and gambling movie 'Lay the Favorite'.
