Breast Reconstruction Awareness day takes place today

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Ireland, after skin cancer.

Every year, over 2,500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Today is Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA) which focuses on education and awareness for women who are considering the surgery.

Dr Richard Hanson has said the day offers important education about the operation for women: "It may be due to the communication and care from the breast care nurses, through the booklets and pamphlets that are given out, it may be a story from a friend or relative, whether it is a good experience or a bad experience and through media or press education, that is why the BRA day is so important.

"It concentrates on education, patient awareness to promote the access for women that may consider breast reconstruction after surgery."
