Kevin O'Malley has been approved by the US Senate to be their new ambassador to Ireland.

Kevin O'Malley has been approved by the US Senate to be their new ambassador to Ireland.

The Irish-American lawyer from Missouri was nominated for the position two months ago. It is now nearly two years since his predecessor, Dan Rooney, stepped down from the role.

Mr O'Malley has dual Irish and US citizenship, and his grandparents were from Westport in County Mayo.
