Caroline Wozniacki pulled out of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships due to a virus on Monday.

The number nine seed was due to play Stefanie Voegele, a lucky loser following the withdrawal of Samantha Stosur, in the first round.

But another lucky loser, Polona Hercog, who lost in three sets to Lucie Hradecka in qualifying, replaced Wozniacki before losing 6-3 6-2.

The Dane won the title in 2011 and has reached at least the semi-finals on another four occasions.

Wozniacki has not turned out competitively since the Australian Open, where she lost in the third round to Maria Sharapova.

World number 15 Julia Goerges lost to America's Alison Riske 6-4 7-5 while Elise Mertens, ranked 16th in the world, also suffered a shock 5-7 6-4 7-5 defeat to world number 107 Zhu Lin.

Dominika Cibulkova beat Lara Arruabarrena 7-5 1-6 2-6 and Carla Suarez Navarro beat Barbora Strycova in straight sets.

Jelena Ostapenko lost to Jennifer Brady, Zhang Shuai of China overcame Anett Kontaveit, Katerina Siniakova beat Petra Martic, Dalila Jakupovic edged past Zarina Diyas while world number 56 Ons Jabeur upset world number 25 Donna Vekic.

At the Hungarian Ladies Open, Britain's Heather Watson lost 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-4) to 17-year-old Russian Anastasia Potapova.

Andrea Petkovic beat Ana Bogdan in straight sets, Tereza Smitkova beat fellow Czech Tereza Martincova while Spain's Georgina Garcia Perez beat Italy's Jasmine Paolini.

Germany's Tamara Korpatsch lost to Aleksandra Krunic and Pauline Parmentier beat Ana Konjuh.
