Latest: Met Éireann issue Status Orange weather warning for 15 counties

Update 2.30pm: Met Éireann has issued a nationwide warning for thunder.

The Status Orange alert applies to Connacht, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary.

People in those areas are being told to expect widespread thunderstorms between now and eleven tonight.

Forecasters also say large amounts of rain could also fall, leading to spot flooding.

Heavy rainfall and spot flooding is on the way for some parts of the country.

Met Éireann says a status yellow weather warning comes into effect from noon today until 9pm tonight.

It predicts heavy thundery downpours which will lead to high intensity rainfall with some localised spot flooding possible.

The Western half of the country and the Midlands are most at risk.

The pollen count for today is also high countrywide.
