A young boy and his mother have been seriously injured in a two-car crash in Co Laois.

A young boy and his mother have been seriously injured in a two-car crash in Co Laois.

The accident happened on the Portlaoise Road outside Portarlington at around 8.30pm yesterday.

A mother and her four-year-old son were seriously injured while a six-year-old boy in the same car sustained minor injuries.

The male driver of the second car, who was travelling alone, escaped with non life-threatening injuries.

Those injured in the crash are being treated at the Midlands Regional Hospitals in Portlaoise and Tullamore.

The road is closed for a forensic examination.
