A large protest is expected outside Limerick Courthouse later, where more than 200 home repossession applications are listed to be heard.

The first involves 219 applications to repossess residential homes by a number of lenders and will start at 10 this morning.

A number of opposition TDs are to attend to show solidarity with homeowners before the court.

The applications are being taken by all the major banking institutions and others.

Of the well known lenders, TSB has the bulk of cases, pursuing 57 individuals or families.

AIB is taking 37 cases, Ulster Bank 27, Bank of Ireland 14 and KBC 12.

Fianna Fáil TDs Willie O'Dea and Niall Collins say they will attend proceedings to show solidarity with homeowners.

In the past years, 1,000 possession orders have been approved by the courts.

Latest figures show 37,500 mortgages are currently more than two years in arrears.
