Heaslip named as new Leinster captain

Ireland number eight Jamie Heaslip will take over from Leo Cullen as captain of Leinster.

Leinster coach Matt O’Connor has named him as the new captain, with Rob Kearney and Sean O’Brien both to act as vice-captains to the squad.

Heaslip has previous experience leading his province and has captained Ireland a number of times in the past. He has twice been named in British and Irish Lions squads, in 2009 and 2013.

Leinster are current Pro12 champions and begin their defence of that title next month.

Their first fixture in the new European Rugby Champions Cup, which is replacing the Heineken Cup, takes place in October.
