Abortion controversy: HSE hits out at claims it knew of case in May

The Health Service Executive has hit back at media claims that it knew in May about the case of a woman at the centre of the latest abortion controversy, two months earlier than previously reported.

The HSE has said any inference that it misled anyone during the 8-22 week period of the woman's pregnancy is wrong.

It added the investigation announced yesterday is being undertaken to discern what happened during that time.

The Irish Times claims the woman had tried to take her own life while 16 weeks pregnant and it was at that point a counsellor flagged the case with the health authority.

Her baby was delivered by C-section at 25 weeks after a doctor ruled the pregnancy was too advanced for an abortion.
