Study finds sexes on similar levels in hazardous college alcohol consumption

A new study has found university students are drinking more with female students consume as much, if not more, alcohol as their male counterparts.

65% of men and 67% of women reported hazardous alcohol consumption.

The UCC research also shows 17% of male students and 5% of women were consuming more than six units of alcohol at least four times a week.

2,500 students were questioned for the research.

Commenting lead author Martin Davoren said, “This study highlights the need for effective public policy measures such as a minimum unit price for alcohol.

“This finding is yet another signpost that our relationship with alcohol as a nation is unwholesome and detrimental to health.”

UCC Students’ Union President Mark Stanton has called for national action on the results of the study.

“The results of this study should be seen as a call to action nationally - it is important to remember this isn't just an issue for UCC students, or students in general. A national conversation needs to take place and students need to be at the heart of the discussion, not the topic of it,” said Stanton.
