Tests carried out on guns after gangland killing

Ballistic experts are conducting forensic tests on two guns found in the wake of a suspected gangland assassination in Dublin.

The victim, named locally as 41-year-old Mark Desmond (pictured), was well known to gardai.

Originally from Ballyfermot in Dublin, he suffered a number of gunshot wounds at Griffeen Valley Park in Lucan shortly after 8pm on Friday night.

Gardai said one gun was recovered from a blue-coloured Mazda 6 car, with an 05 registration plate, that was found burnt-out nearby at Hayden's Lane.

Another firearm was found in nearby woodland on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Desmond was pronounced dead at the scene once paramedics arrived.

The victim had been targeted before in a shooting but escaped with non-life threatening wounds.

He has previously been charged with a double murder but the charges were later withdrawn.

He was also convicted of unlawful possession of firearms with intent to endanger life.

That conviction was later overturned.

Gardai have appealed for anyone with information to get in contact.
