Bill passed in Seanad to protect tips of hospitality workers
A Bill was successfully passed in the Seanad last night which will ensure bar and restaurant workers keep their tips.
Sinn Féin's Bill to give staff a legal right to their tips has passed Committee stage in the Seanad with all-party support.
It will make it illegal for employers to take their workers' tips and ensure that employees are protected by the law.
It means businesses would have to display their tipping policy to ensure customers have full transparency as to how their tip will be shared.
Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan says they're delighted to have been able to move this Bill through the house to the final stage of proceedings.
He says this would not have been possible without the public support of ICTU, SIPTU, Mandate, Unite and the USI.
Meanwhile Labour Senator Ged Nash along with his colleagues in the party also backed the Bill.
He says he has worked closely with Senator Gavan and trade unions representing workers in bars, hotels and restaurants on it.
