Europe backs SF move for greater access to redundancy fund

The European Parliament has voted in favour of a report from a Sinn Féin MEP that calls for greater access to an EU fund for people who lost their jobs as a result of the economic crisis.

MEPs in Strasbourg supported a report from Liadh Ní Riada who is on the Parliament's Budget Committee.

She wants more people to be able to avail of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund, which was set up to provide assistance to those who were made redundant as a result of global changes.

"Maybe people at home would remember Dell and TalkTalk - they lost their jobs and they were able to avail of this fund, but it's usually distributed by central government," the Sinn Féin MEP said.

"The amendments that I made was that it would be more regional access - so you're not relying on going to the central government for this."
