Some of the leading candidates to be the next pope have held masses in Rome ahead of the start of the papal conclave on Tuesday.

Brazil's Odilo Scherer, Luis Tagle of the Phillippines and Sean O'Malley of the US were among the cardinals who drew the biggest crowds.

The cardinals will convene in the Sistine Chapel on Tuesday afternoon to begin voting for the next pope.
