Coastguard warning over sea fog danger

As the warm weather continues, the Irish Coastguard is advising people to watch out for heavy sea fog in coastal areas.

The warning comes after three teenagers had to be rescued yesterday evening on Sandymount Beach in Dublin.

The girls became disorientated when visibility suddenly dropped to about 100 metres. Because of the incoming tide, they quickly found themselves surrounded by water.

They called for help on their mobile phone and Dun Laoghaire lifeboat managed to find them.

"The fog conditions come in from the sea towards the land … just keep an eye out seaward, and if you see any low cloud formation, there's a good chance it'll roll in and cover the whole bay," crew member Mark McGibney explained.

In a separate incident yesterday, a girl was rescued by the Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard after breaking her leg between Bullock Harbour and Pilot View.

A group of teenagers were climbed the rock face to do some diving when the accident happened.
