Focused Bohane edges out Cooney around Conna

Michael Bohane was sharp and focused in his win over James Cooney at Conna on Sunday.

He reached the Priest’s corner with a good first shot. Cooney’s bowl was left, but it hopped right and went over the bridge parapet into the Bride. That left him almost a bowl down. Bohane’s second was too tight to the kerb and Cooney beat it well to close the gap. Bohane’s next hopped the kerb and Cooney kept the lead well under a bowl.

Bohane’s bowl went over the kerb too at Thornhill bend and Cooney replied with a brilliant bowl towards the school. Bohane beat that by 80m with a good shot to O’Keeffe’s wall. Cooney now needed an exceptional shot to open Knockmourne bend. He played well, but it drifted left and just missed light. Bohane replied with a sensational bowl that went all the way to the forge bend to take his lead to almost a bowl.

Bohane’s bowl up the hill fell right and Cooney beat it by 90m with a super bowl to Morrison’s. Bohane beat that by 60m with his next. Cooney then missed sight at the double bends. Bohane went well past the bends and Cooney missed this to fall a bowl behind.

Bohane pushed his lead well over a bowl with another great shot to clear sight at Mo’s cross. It was back to a bare bowl at the top of Ballybride. Cooney’s next broke left and Bohane punished him with a massive bowl into the hollow. Cooney beat that to keep the lead just under two bowls. Bohane raised the second bowl with a searing next shot tight on the left which effectively ended the contest.

Denis Cooney gained the advantage on Brendan O’Neill with a big bowl from the forge in the return and he won comfortably in the last shot.

Michéal O’Sullivan finished strongly against Ger Connolly to reach the Fergal Beamish Cup final at The Pike. He won the first shots, but he lost ground when his third bowl was impeded in a gravel drive. Connolly had 70m facing White’s cross, but missed the line and O’Sullivan made it with his sixth to level the score.

Connolly got two poor shots from the cross to drift almost a bowl behind. O’Sullivan then got a big bowl towards the bridge to take a bowl and 70m odds. Connolly brought the lead just under a bowl at Dreaper’s after getting a good rub at the bridge. O’Sullivan restored the bowl of odds with his shot past the church cross. He increased his odds with his next and had two bowls and 40m odds at the novice line.

Darren Santry, who faces him in the final, will also contest the Béal na Blá final too after an impressive win over Paul Walsh and Olan Noonan.

Noonan made a great start to go close to a bowl of odds clear in three to sight at the water. He held that lead to Shorten’s cross. Santry and Walsh picked up the pace to Long’s lane, while Noonan hit a bad patch to fall a bowl behind Santry. Santry pushed clear of Walsh to Twohig’s and had a bowl on him at the line.

Carbery (Darragh Dempsey, Shane Crowley, Conor Crowley) on 1,477.5m won the boys final in the Munster Youth Team event at Ballineen. Only 33.5m separated the first three teams, with West Cork (Danny O’Donovan, Brian Horgan, Daniel O’Sullivan) just 18m further back and South-West (Tommy O’Sullivan, Cillian Twohig, Travis O’Sullivan) third on 1,444m.

Sisters Hannah, Margaret and Ellen Sexton, representing South-West, were clear winners of the Girls final on 1,407m.

James Nagle showed flashes of excellence in his win over Andrew O’Callaghan at Whitechurch. He had a big lead after four to halfway down the hill. O’Callaghan won the lead with a great shot down the hill. They were locked together till Nagle got a big throw past Downey’s line. He raised a bowl up the straight, but O’Callaghan knocked it at the farm. Nagle picked up the pace again and won by two bowls.

At the same venue John O’Rourke had to produce a big last shot to beat Wayne Callanan. David Hubbard easily beat Cian Boyle in the return.

Christy Mullins beat Jimmy O’Driscoll by two bowls at Lyre. He led by 40m after three past the forestry gate. He increased his lead to the tunnel and had almost a bowl at Crowley’s bend. He pushed close to a second bowl past McCarthy’s and raised it with his 12th to the wall.

Craig Moynihan beat Kieran Murphy with a big last shot at Ballinacurra. At Ballincurrig Flor O’Sullivan put in a brilliant finish to beat Bert Randalls. At the Bog Road Derry Crowley held on in the last shot despite two great last throws from Stephen Bowen.
