Ireland international James McCarthy has had a successful operation on his double leg break, writes Stephen Barry.

The midfielder, who suffered the horrific injury during Everton’s 1-1 draw with West Brom on Saturday, posted a picture of himself smiling in his hospital bed on Instagram.

He wrote: "Just a quick message to say that my operation went well, thanks to all the staff involved! And a big thanks to all my family, friends and Olivia. Also cheers for all the messages, I appreciate it."

The update comes the day after his club and country teammate Seamus Coleman returned to action, ten months after he sustained a similar serious injury.

Coleman said he’ll be with McCarthy “every step of the way” as he begins the same, long road to recovery.

"It was heartbreaking for me to see, nothing to do with my own injury, just because he’s a very close friend and someone that I really admire.

"He will be back from it and I want to go out there every week and do as well as I possibly can to show James that he will be back and he will be fine."

On his own return, Coleman told the club’s website: "To be able to walk out of the tunnel and see the stadium was great. I managed to get some minutes under my belt and that was fantastic. I treated it like a first-team game and gave it everything.

"I’ve been looking forward to that moment for the last few months - just being able to get the kit on, doing up the shin-pads, rolling my socks up and walking out there. It was great to be able to feel like a footballer again - it’s a fantastic feeling."
