Cork legend Cunningham to take the reins of UCC Fitzgibbon team

Former Cork selector Ger Cunningham, who left Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s backroom team at the end of last season, has been named the new manager of UCC’s Fitzgibbon Cup team.

Cunningham, who also enjoyed an illustrious inter-county career with Cork during the eighties and nineties, takes over from former Tipperary All-Ireland winner Eddie Enright.

UCC will lose nothing in terms of All-Ireland experience however, given that Cunningham amassed three All-Irelands; four All-Stars and seven Munster titles throughout his career.

More recently he has impressed as the university’s Freshers team coach while the Fitzgibbon side he’s taking over enjoyed tremendous success in the same period – winning the title in 2012 and 2013 and reaching the semi-finals this year.

His backroom panel also carries plenty experience with it in the shape of All-Ireland winner Tim Crowley and former Cork physical trainer during the All-Ireland winning campaigns of 2004 and 2005, Sean McGrath. Also assisting the St Finbarr’s man will be Tom Kingston, Jim McEvoy and Noel Furlong.

Cunningham was previously linked with the vacant Limerick manager post following his departure from the Cork set-up late last year and fellow Barr’s man, John Allen’s decision to step down from the Limerick role.
