In a statement on the GPA website the player said it had “been an honour and privilege” to be involved with the Waterford team.

“There is no greater feeling than taking to the hurling field and representing your county with your loyal supporters at your back,” said Molumphy.

“I would like to pay tribute to the fantastic managers and selectors I have been fortunate to play under throughout the years and to the calibre of my teammates with whom I was lucky enough to battle alongside.”

Molumphy has been on the Waterford inter-county panel since 2006 and won two Munster titles with the county, most recently in 2010 when he captained the side to victory over Cork. He was an All-Star in 2007.

The 30-year-old statement concluded by sending best wishes to his former team-mates:

“I would like to wish the current Waterford hurling team and management the very best of luck in the future.”
