Liam Sheedy unhappy with calls by ref Colm Lyons

Liam Sheedy didn’t require much coaxing to part company with his views on referee Colm Lyons’ performance.

Without a single prompt, Sheedy expressed his annoyance that John McGrath and Jason Forde had not been awarded frees late in the second period.

“I thought there was much softer frees given in the first-half,” said the Tipperary manager, adding in the next breath: “I am not blaming the referee for where we are”.

On the subject of those first-half frees, Sheedy claimed the free count was 10 to 1 in Wexford’s favour when Cork referee Lyons awarded Tipperary a free which drew a sizeable cheer from irritated Tipperary fans in the crowd of 6,700.

“I was wondering did the arms go both ways at all. I thought it was only going one way. I just felt some of them that were given in that first half, versus John McGrath and Jason, to me, they were clearly fouled in the second half. Look, I appreciate how difficult it is to referee a game, but there were a few moments in that game and when you lose by a point, everything is questionable.”

No qualms, mind you, did Sheedy have with regard to the yellow cards which saw Noel McGrath walk to the line on 34 minutes.

“They were two yellow cards. Now, I don’t think either of them were malicious. When you mistime a challenge like that, it is yellow. And if you do it twice, you are probably going to see the line. I’d have much bigger things to complain about than the sending-off.”

What Tipperary produced when operating with 14 men heartened Sheedy.

“We really worked hard today, our 10 minutes at the start of the second half was probably as good a period as we have put together since the Clare match. A man down, we really took the game to Wexford.

“When the man was sent off, we ended up having to rain ball down on top of their half-back line. The forwards have to empty themselves in that situation. Niall O’Meara and Bonner Maher, you couldn’t but say they emptied themselves to a stage where they couldn’t go any more.

“Bonner won a ball at the finish and he was on one leg the poor man.”
