Cody escapes punishment for 'criminal' comments

After a hearing in Croke Park last night, the GAA have ruled that recent comments made by Kilkenny manager Brian Cody about referee Barry Kelly do not warrant a sanction.

The remarks related to the first All-Ireland final between Kilkenny and Tipperary, which ended in a draw. Cody had described a late free awarded to Tipperary as “criminal” - if scored they would almost certainly have won the match.

“At the end of the day,” said Cody. “They were handed an opportunity with the last puck of the game the last day in the wrong to win the game.

“They were handed an opportunity by a complete wrong decision. We didn’t speak about it the last day but it was criminal what was done the last day.”

In a statement on GAA.ie the organisation said the comments “did not constitute misconduct considered to have discredited the Association.”

The statement did however go on to say, “Briain Mac Óda (Cody) was warned as to his future conduct in media interviews.”
