Jury retires in trial of nurse accused of murdering her mother on Christmas Day

The jury in the trial of a nurse accused of murdering her mother in Dublin on Christmas Eve 2010 has retired to consider a verdict.

Greta Dudko of Station Court Hall, Clonsilla admits beating her mother with a glass bottle but denies murdering her.

Anna Butautiene was found dead in her bed on Christmas Day 2010.

Her daughter Greta Dudko told gardaí she knocked her out during a fight the night before by pushing her against a wall.

The 36-year-old said she then put her to bed before fetching an empty liqueur bottle and hitting her twice in the face with it.

When asked why she had done that, she claimed her mother was trying to break up her marriage by accusing her husband of cheating on her.

"I feared she was going to ruin my life," she said.

The jurors were addressed for a final time today before being sent out to begin their deliberations.

At the beginning of the trial, Greta Dudko pleaded guilty to manslaughter but this was not accepted by the DPP and it is now up to the jury to try and decide whether there was an intent to kill.
