A Former Fianna Fáil Minister has claimed a hung Dáil would be good for democracy.

Noel Dempsey has said without a majority in Government the main parties would be forced to debate motions with the House.

He also claimed 'everyone who is elected' has a responsibility to ensure that we have a Government that listens to the people.

Three opinion polls this weekend gave different predictions for the outcome of the vote.

But Noel Dempsey thinks Fine Gael and Labour won't dominate the Dáil: “The current Government will be about 10 seats short of an overall majority.

“Might that not be a very good thing for democracy?

“Instead of having a juggernaut in the Dáil on the Government benches, I think it would be a good idea for democracy if people had to sit down.

The people that are elected at the end of the day had to sit down and negotiate the policies that they want to implement”.
