Michael Kitt has announced he is to retire from politics.

The Galway TD says he will not seek re-election when the General Election takes place.

First elected to the Dáil in 1975, he has contested a by-election and 11 general elections throughout his career.

Mr Kitt has served as Minister of State in three Departments and is now the Leas-Cheann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann.
