Dáil may have been mislead about reasons for Anglo's liquidation, claims TD

An independent TD says the Dáil may have been mislead about the reasons for the liquidation of the former Anglo Irish Bank.

Catherine Murphy says new documents reveal a strained relationship between the Department of Finance and the directors of IBRC.

The documents, released under Freedom of Information, reveal tensions over the handling of the sale of Siteserv to Denis O'Brien's Millington firm.

Deputy Murphy says the Finance Minister Michael Noonan spoke highly of IBRC's managers when the bank was liquidated but the new documents suggest otherwise.

"Well I feel mislead. I think it would have been very valuable for us to know the kind of conflict there was between the minister and the department. He made great play in complimenting them," said Murphy.

"There was a lot in these documents that would make you question why he went out of his way to do that," said Murphy.

The issue has been raised in the Dáil, with Fianna Fail asking why Siteserv was sold at a loss of over €100m.

Party leader Micheál Martin says an urgent inquiry is needed to find out why IBRC sold the company at the price that it did.

"I'm asking for a full and proper inquiry to get to the bottom of this. It is important because it goes to the very heart of why the taxpayer was or is being protected or not being protected in terms of the sale of state assets," said Martin.
