Taoiseach to discuss direction of EU post-Brexit at EU Council in Brussels

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is in Brussels this morning for an EU Council meeting.

Leaders of the EU27 are expected to discuss proposals for changes to the composition of the European Parliament, post-Brexit.

The long-term budget of the union after the UK leaves will also be discussed.

Mr Varadkar and the other leaders will then meet their counterparts from the G5 countries in Sahel region of Africa.

Ireland provided €3.5m in funding to the G5 countries in 2017, and has civilian experts deployed in EU missions in Niger and Mali.

Twenty members of the Permanent Defence Forces are also deployed in Mali.
