Kelly: Any govt avoiding plebiscite on Irish Water would have to answer to people

The Environment Minister Alan Kelly has admitted that any future government could avoid a plebiscite on Irish Water.

But Minister Kelly says if any government wanted to avoid it, they would have to answer to the public who elected them.

The Seanad has been debating amendments to the Water Services Bill for around five hours now, but is still considering just the first amendment.

Minister Kelly says the plebiscite is the best he can do.

He said: "I'm a straight talker, all legislation can be changed.

"However, what government into the future, no matter who they are - and I would respectfully say to senators to have a bit more confidence in the fact the people know who they're voting for - people know who they vote for and the know what they stand for."
