Live register would deter drivers from drink-driving, survey reveals

An AA survey suggests that some drivers may still be taking the risk of driving while over the legal limit.

A massive 68% of drivers questioned, supported the introduction of a live register to publish the names of those found guilty of drink-driving offences.

But although the result of the poll was encouraging - AA Ireland's Barry Aldworth says it remains clear that some people still haven't got the message: "Just under 20% of people said that having their name on a live register would have a major effect on their behaviour, so what that seems to point towards is that while we have come a long way tackling drink driving in this country, the risk of being named and shamed and the risk of family and friends finding out about an offence would be another deterrent.
