Yes group claims Church 'contributed to a muddying' of #MarRef issues

The Yes Equality campaign says it is disappointed in how the Catholic Church participated in the Marriage Equality Referendum debate.

The organisation has hosted its final press conference of the campaign, saying the decision to allow same-sex couples marry has created a new Republic.

However Co-Director Gráinne Healy says the Catholic Church in some ways muddied the waters on the issue, which was "unhelpful".

She said: "The Catholic hierarchy did not come out at any stage and be clear to the people that what they were actually being asked to vote on was to allow lesbian and gay people access to civil marriage.

"I think in not saying that, they contributed to a muddying of the issues which I fell was really unhelpful.

"I am disappointed that that was how they decided they would run their campaign."
