Ministers turn to Attorney General for advice after failing to reach decision on Apple ruling

Ministers are to take further legal advice from the Attorney General, after failing to reach a decision on their response to the Apple tax ruling.

Yesterday, the Cabinet spent over five hours debating the European Commission's ruling.

Fine Gael Ministers want to appeal the order for Apple to pay €13bn in back-taxes to Revenue.

However, Independent Alliance ministers want the Dáil to be recalled to debate the issue, if they are to support an appeal.

Another cabinet meeting on the issue is due to take place tomorrow morning.

Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says it is not Ireland's place to tax income earned outside of Ireland: "We cannot be the tax collector for the rest of the world.

"You can only tax what happens in Ireland, what is made in Ireland.

"We cannot tax the profits and the value added in other parts of the world. This is a global problem.

"I have spoken about this consistently, that is why the OECD rules have fundamentally changed the game for the corporate sector, the multinational sector, in the last number of years."
