Gaeltacht host families may get extra water allowance

Families who take in pupils for Gaeltacht courses may be set for a special deal on water charges.

The Gaeltacht minister Joe McHugh says he's in talks to make sure households aren't penalised for taking in pupils trying to learn the language.

Households already get an allowance of €9.50 per day, tax free, for every student they take in during a summer course.

In response to written Dáil questions, Minister McHugh says he hopes to discuss the issue with Irish Water, as well as ministers Alan Kelly and Michael Noonan.
