Catherine Murphy calls on Irish government to take climate change action

One of the leaders of the social democrats party says the Government needs to do more to protect the environment.

The United nations conference on climate change begins in Paris tomorrow.

The Taoiseach, the Environment Minister and the Minister for Energy and Natural Resources will represent Ireland at the summit.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of cities in Ireland and around the world calling for world leaders to negotiate a deal on climate change.

Demonstrations this afternoon took place in marches Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast this afternoon.

One of the demonstrators Social Democrats TD Catherine Murphy, says the Irish government needs to take action on climate change now, for the sake of future generations.

"We have fudged, or the Irish government have fudged a lot, we have very week climate legislation that doesn't have any targets in it, we have plans that have been pushed off into the future, and essentially that's where we're supposed to be stating our ambition.

"We'll get to a point of no return very quickly and we have a responsibility to future generations."
