Euro survey reveals high rate of cannabis use among Irish youth

The percentage of Irish young people who admit to using cannabis is more than twice the European average, a new survey has found.

According to a new Eurobarometer survey, 16% of young Irish people have used cannabis in the last 30 days - compared to a 7% average across the EU.

Some 72% of irish respondents said it would be easy to obtain cannabis within 24 hours, with 36% saying it would easy to get cocaine in that time period.

Almost half of Irish respondents (48%) said it was easy to buy ecstasy - the highest rate in the survey.

The study also found that 22% of Irish young people have used so-called designer drugs at some point, compares to 8% at EU level.

That is a rise of 6 percentage points since the last survey.
