An investigation has been launched after a senior garda died this morning following a shooting incident.

An investigation has been launched after a senior garda died this morning following a shooting incident at a garda station.

The incident happened at Ballyshannon Garda Station in Donegal where he was based. It is understood that he died following a shot from an official issue handgun.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has now launched an investigation into the incident, which is being described by sources as an ‘awful tragedy’.

Gardaí will also investigate the incident and counselling will be offered to the officers colleagues, it is understood.

The Officer has not been named but it is believed that he is in his 40's.
