Teenage girl dies after Mayo road accident

A teenage girl has died following a crash in Mayo.

The 18-year-old girl was walking on the Castlebar to Claremorris Road - the N60 - at about 5pm yesterday evening when she was struck by a car.

She was taken to Mayo General Hospital where she died at 11.30pm last night.

The 83-year-old female driver and a young male passenger were taken to hospital as a precaution, but no injuries were reported.

The road was closed for an examination but has since since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact them in Castlebar.
