Fianna Fáil to ask Bertie Ahern to rejoin party

Controversial former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern could be set to rejoin Fianna Fáil after his former branch unanimously backed a motion seeking his return as he "deserves a second chance", writes Fiachra Ó Cionnaith, Irish Examiner.

The chairman of Fianna Fáil Dublin Central Brian Mohan confirmed the highly divisive move last night after taking part in a "deep, meaningful discussion" with 30 other local members at the Skylon Hotel.

In comments to media outlets last night, Mr Mohan accepted the former Taoiseach is "controversial in some people's eyes" but should return as he "deserves a second chance".

While a senior Fianna Fáil spokesperson was not immediately available for comment, the late night news is likely to alarm party headquarters and current leader Micheál Martin.

Mr Ahern - who has made increasing media appearances in recent months - resigned as Taoiseach in spring 2008 amid ongoing corruption allegations, and stepped down as a TD in 2011.

He resigned from Fianna Fáil in March 2012 after the Mahon tribunal said he did not truthfully account for payments of IR£165,000 made to accounts connected to him.
