New research shows that 84% of people think the entire board of the Irish Farmers' Association should resign.

The poll by Irish farming website Agriland was carried out in the wake of the organisation's wage scandal.

There has been major controversy since details emerged last week of former General Secretary Pat Smith's salary and €2 m severance package.

The revelations have also led to the resignation of the group's President Eddie Downey.

The IFA says it will legally challenge the multi-million euro payouts and is expected to choose a date this weekend to elect successors, but Editor of Agriland Margaret Donnelly says ordinary members want to start again with a clean slate.

"The IFA really needs to show that it's listening to it's members, and the meetings that have taken place over the last week or so of ordinary farmers are saying they want the rest of the executive board to step down.

"So I think that is the first thing that needs to happen, and then, they can look at going forward electing a new president, putting new people into these key roles and then developing better transparency and accountability."
