An elderly couple have been critically injured in a road crash near Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

Update 9.25pm: A woman in her 60s was fatally injured in a road traffic collision this afternoon on the Limerick Road in Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

The woman was the driver of a car which collided with a van at about 3pm.

Two passengers in the car, a man in his 70s - who is the woman’s husband - and a man in his 50s, were airlifted to University Hospital Limerick with serious injuries.

The woman’s husband is believed to be in a critical condition.

The driver of the van was not injured.

A Garda investigation has begun into the cause of the crash and a forensic examination of the crash site is underway.

Earlier: An elderly couple have been critically injured in a road crash near Roscrea, Co Tipperary, writes David Raleigh.

The man and woman, who are from Tallaght, Dublin, were travelling in a car which was involved in a head-on collision with a van around 5.30pm.

The Old N7 remains closed in both directions between Roscrea and Dunkerrin following the collision.

The couple were cut from the wreckage by emergency service personnel before been airlifted to hospital from the scene by the Shannon-based Coast Guard Rescue 115 Helicopter and the Athlone-based Air Corps Emergency Aeromedical Service AIRCORPS 112 helicopter.

The man and woman who are aged in their 70s are being treated for multiple injuries at University Hospital Limerick.

A man who was travelling in the car with the couple was also transferred to University Hospital Limerick, where he is believed to be in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the van was also injured, but his condition is not known.

Ambulance crews from Nenagh, Birr, and Portloaise attended the scene.

Gardaí in Tipperary are investigating the incident.
