Rally to protest imprisonment of Afghan man assaulted in jail

The Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald is being asked to provide protection for a young Afghan man who was assaulted in Cloverhill prison in Dublin on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old was found walking along the Naas dual carriageway around two weeks ago.

He could not speak English and had no documentation and was detained in Cloverhill.

Action will take place outside the Department of Justice, St Stephen's Green, Dublin, from 11am this morning asking that he be freed.

Shane O'Curry, Director of the European Network Against Racism in Ireland says instead, Walli needs help and protection.

He said: "Walli Ullah Safi, is the young man who was injured in the recent disturbances in Cloverhill Prison. It is being called because we feel he shouldn't have been in prison in the first place.

"This man has committed no crime, he is evidently someone who is seeking asylum and protection."
