Driving conditions remain difficult, AA Roadwatch warns

AA Roadwatch has said that driving conditions remain difficult in many areas.

Arwen Foley has urged motorists to be extremely careful because even when it thaws road conditions will have deteriorated, with new potholes a particular problem.

"As soon as the snow and ice gets into the little craters, the small craters in the road, it expands once it freezes over," she said.

"Then it melts, and the water disappears, leaving this larger hole, and for an Irish winter we go through cold spurts and then warmer spurts in winter, so that is actually what's causing the problem - it's the constant freezing and melting, freezing and melting, which is causing the road to become so damaged, and we're seeing an awful lot of potholes."

A Status Orange snow-ice warning was issued by Met Éireann for Cavan and Monaghan until later this afternoon.

It follows wintry showers, with further snow accumulations ranging from 3-to-6cm likely on high ground.

A Status Yellow snow and ice warning is in effect for Connacht, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Donegal, Clare, Kerry and Tipperary until 3pm today.
