Update 10.20pm: Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after a pedestrian was killed in Cork City earlier today following a collision with an articulated truck, writes Eoin English.

The man, who was in his 40s, was struck by the lorry at the junction of Coburg St and Bridge St, close to the bottom of St Patrick’s Hill, just before 11am.

Eyewitnesses said it appeared as if the man stepped off the footpath close to the lorry’s cab a split second before it moved off.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. His body was removed to Cork University Hospital for an autopsy.

The area was sealed off for a full Garda forensic collision investigation and diversions were put in place for several hours.
