An grenade used as long ago as the War of Independence has been made safe in Aughrim, Co Galway this afternoon.

An grenade used as long ago as the War of Independence has been made safe in Aughrim, Co Galway this afternoon.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to the scene by gardaí after a badly corroded Mills 36 type hand grenade was found on grassland by a member of the public close to a walking path.

The scene was declared safe at 5.30pm.

The Mills type grenade was used during the War of Independence, the Civil War and both World Wars.
